On Valentine’s Day, we had the joy of gathering 90 incredible women for a special lunch centered on The Gift of Love – the joy of generosity. Julie Miller, Adera’s Executive Director, shared how generosity transforms lives, not just for those who receive but also for those who give.
She reflected on her own journey of generosity and how Adera, founded through the generosity of Caren and Joe Robertson, now impacts over 800 families and 350 students in the Korah community of Addis Ababa. The heart of Adera’s work is providing opportunities for women and families to break the cycle of poverty through dignified work and education.
The Power of a Bead
One of the most moving moments was the story behind the Adera artisans and their handcrafted beads. Each bead necklace represents a week’s wages for a woman in Ethiopia, offering her not just an income but a sense of dignity and hope. Julie shared stories of resilience, like Hagare, once bedridden and hopeless, now strong and respected in her home and community. Her daughter has even graduated with an accounting degree and now works at a bank—an incredible testament to generational change!

Another powerful story was that of Selam, a woman who overcame immense hardship—child marriage, homelessness, abuse, and HIV—to build a new future for herself and her children. With Adera’s support, she has moved from dependence to independence, embodying the slow but transformative journey of empowerment.
A Ripple Effect of Hope
The response from the ladies at the lunch was deeply encouraging. Many were moved to action, eager to support Adera through purchasing jewelry, spreading the word, and considering their own journey of generosity. The event was a reminder that we cannot change everything for everyone, but we can change something for someone.

As we continue this work, we are grateful for each person who walks alongside Adera, making a tangible impact on the lives of women and families in Ethiopia. May we all embrace the gift of love in our own lives, knowing that generosity has the power to transform not just individuals, but entire communities. – the Adera Team
